THE RATS at Koma F, February 26, 2010

This weekend Köpi is celebrating its 20th birthday with a huge festival. I was there for the Friday event and it was massive. The site was muddy and puddles everywhere because the snow was finally melting after two month, but it didn´t keep way more than thousand people from showing up. A great testament to the vitality of the squatters movement and the anarchist punk scene.

There were many groups playing last night but the only one I saw was  the Rats from Umeå. I got to meet Johan, one of their two guitarists, before the show and he told me they had taken a plane to Berlin and it felt like summer for them because in Umeå it was still minus 25° Celcius.

The Rats are not on tour and were invited to the Köpi Fest exclusively. Deservedly so because they absolutely destroy live. They have the best set-up for any rock´n´roll group: a solid backing band of smart but rather normal guys and a real animal for a front person.

They have played Koma F many times, one of their shows was my first post in June 2008. I I hope to catch them again because they rule.

köpi-1A mixed bag of bands last Saturday at Koma F. I really love these kind of shows. Even if  I might not like each and every band at least I get a feel for what else is going on in Hardcore Punk in Berlin and around the World. Sticking to just one style gets boring fast.

Locals Katyusha started the evening with some brutal crust-core. Hadn´t heard them before and was surprised. They sure have a lot of potential.katyusha

Next were The Black Gramola Conspiracy from Basque Country, who I´m sure none of the people at the show heard before. They don´t support MySpace and only had a really nicely packaged, self-produced CD for sale. This I bought and you should´ve too. It was only 3 euros and it´s great! Diy or die!the-black-gramola-conspiracy-1

They immediately got the people moving. Their dual female-male vocals were very effective and despite their political approach, they seemed to enjoy the party-like atmosphere. They should work on their in-between announcements though. I was standing right in front and I couldn´t understand anything. I know most people don´t care about that but they seemed to have a lot to say in their lyrics. I would have liked to know what their songs, that were sung in the Basque language I guess,  were about. the-black-gramola-conspiracy-2

The vocalist of Bandanos had danced to TBGC, so one could guess what was coming up next. Bandanos from Brazil are a great Thrash-Metal band who do everything right. They´re Punks who like metal. Not the other way ´round.

Well, see for yourself:

RUIDOSA INMUNDICIA from Vienna played a great set of their super-fast yet melodic hardcore. I love their music and their 7″ on Thought Crime Records was one of my last year`s favorites.

When the all-mighty DROP DEAD got on stage the house was packed to capacity. DROP DEAD are one of those bands that draw people from all segments of the D.i.y scene and rightly so. They have been at it for a long time and still play some of the most brutal and political hardcore around. A very inspiring night at Köpi! Support international DIY HC Punk and radical leftist politics!

What a great night at Köpi! Without the help of any of the bi-weekly guides to „everything“ that is going on in this city, without fancy, glossy posters or any other major media, a couple of hundred people showed up tonight to see real underground bands. Only through diy networking and word of mouth. That`s what I call success!

RED HERRING from Portland were a real good change of pace from the usual hardcore punk that is going on at Köpi. Instead of a bass they use a tuba and the guitarist plays a banjo. Plus the singer can really sing. I wish more bands would vary from the tired old routine and make this scene a progressive scene again. One that is not afraid to venture into new territory. I have a lot of hope for this scene but right now there is actually no reason to be in that respect. RED HERRING were quite well received, people danced and I enjoyed their set so much that I bought both their 7″es. And I got a t-shirt for free! Thanks RED HERRING!

WORLD BURNS TO DEATH played another brutal set. Not quite as mean and aggressive as last weekend in Packebusch but still very fuckin`hard. I have to admit, that I was a little disappointed with the crowd because apart from a lot of fists in the air there was not much going on in the „pit“. But that was soon going to change dramatically…

Only seconds into PISSCHRIST`S set the audience exploded.

The singer continually stage-dived into the crowd, kept singing and was always thrown back on stage.

I had missed them when they played at Köpi two years ago, but most people certainly had not forgotten that first impression. A well deserved pay-off for always giving all they`ve got. They played a ragin`set and the crowd got really wild. This was the first show for PISSCHRIST`S European tour so you still have some weeks to catch them somewhere near you. Don`t miss `em…

Only two songs into the set on my way to the side of the stage I stepped into a real sharp piece of glass that pierced through my shoes and into my foot. While I made all these shots I felt the blood soaking my shoes and my socks. I didn`t want to look and just kept shooting to not miss any of the action. After the show A.C told me, that he had seen me accidentally kick some beer bottles of the speakers near the stage while taking photos. I had stepped into the bottles that I had crashed myself! Fuck. But hey, I really  bleed for this shit…
